Factory of the Future

Our experts were asked to create a reference concept for sustainable and digitalized plants for a globally diversified machine and plant manufacturer.

Objective

The aim was to develop a global blueprint for the digitalization, decarbonization and automation of new and existing plants before building a new, state-of-the-art plant.

Approach

In the first step, our experts analyzed the company's global locations and clustered the location types based on product- and production-specific characteristics. In the second step, we used this as the basis for designing an overarching regulatory framework for the digital transformation of the locations. In the third step, we worked together with the company's digitalization and production experts to define development goals and fields of action for the respective location types. Building on this, in the fourth step, the transformation roadmaps of the plants were concretized using application examples of different Industry 4.0 maturity levels and coordinated with the Management Board.

Outcome

The regulatory framework developed, with defined fields of action, site-specific development goals and hundreds of use cases, serves as a guide for the digitalization roadmaps of all plants worldwide. Based on this, a new "state-of-the-art" plant was built and scopes of value creation were relocated from other plants. In a follow-up project, we also quantified the prioritized use cases from the plant roadmaps for strategic controlling on a site-specific basis.
